We all have heard stories of our grandparents using cod liver oil or prune juice to help "move things along". Sure in the 20's and 30's there were pharmaceuticals but obviously nothing like we have now.
I sometimes wonder how or why this shift happened. Clearly there is need for medications, right?
Maybe, maybe not.
I grew up having only taken antibiotics once before the age of 25. I was a healthy kid. I had pretty bad allergies though and was given nasal spray, pills, and an inhaler.
When we were babies our parents put whisky on our gums when we were teething and I distinctly remember having a hot totty or 2 when I was sick.
When did the shift happen? Why did it happen?
Did new drugs come about out of necessity?
Around 1980 is also when the golden arches started popping up everywhere. Convenience food.
When we stopped eating real food is when we started needing a pill for everything!
Where do we draw the line? I am fully aware that I am the poster child for hypocrisy. When I had trouble getting pregnant I looked to the medical profession for help. My savior came in the form of a little man with a bow tie who helped me become a mother. But I also wonder if it's a case of what came first, the chicken or the egg?
I strongly believe that our dependence on medicine is a mostly created need. We are constantly putting things into our bodies that was never intended to be there and at some point we're going to feel it. But we don't want to feel anything unpleasant so instead of removing the thing that is causing the pain let's add anther chemical into our bodies to fix it.
If we keep using pharma to "fix us" instead of listening to our bodies when they cry for help the problem is only going to get worse.
We all remember our mom's asking us, "did you poop today?" when we said we had a belly ache. There was really something to that.
I believe that water, sleep, exercise, healthy foods and oh yeah, a good poop can fix anything.
So before you reach to drugs to help what pains you first ask yourself if you've drank enough, slept enough, moved enough, eaten well.
Doctors should be seen as a last resort for real issues. Not a simple head ache. Drink a glass of water and handle it!
